Kriya Yoga Lineage

What at first may seem to be an extreme lifestyle strategy will later prove to be a practical guide for highly effective living!

"The eight essential stages of Kriya Yoga" are a complete holistic health management system that translate into a path of action, a path of knowledge, and a path of devotion. These lifestyle strategies are designed to initiate a process in physiological, psychological/spiritual development that unfolds in three phases: prepersonal or unconscious awareness, personal or self-conscious awareness and transpersonal or super-conscious awareness. Total Consciousness is the goal of Yoga." Kenneth Toy (Swami Jayananda)

The Eight Essential Stages of Kriya Yoga:

Yama Abstentions
Niyama  Observances
Asana Posture
Pranayama Control of Prana
Pratyahara Sense Withdrawal
Dharana Concentration
Dhyana Meditation
Samadhi Illumination

1. YAMAS - ABSTENTIONS

The religious restraints defined as non-injury, non-lying, non-theft, non-greed and non-sensuality. Purpose: The yamas are the code of ethics that is in compliance with universal law--they are the standards to live by and how we measure and monitor our behavior. They help a person establish a value system through which s/he will filter all of their affairs.

2. NIYAMAS - OBSERVANCES

The observances defined as purification, contentment, austerity, sacred study, and attunement to the Absolute. Purpose: The niyamas are designed to distill, strengthen, and cultivate a person's ability to control psychic energy through the development of the Will as a psychological function.

3. ASANAS - POSTURES - Click here for Options!

Asanas are the physical postures of yoga. They are physical exercises that help develop an acute relationship between the body and the mind. The physical body is a manifestation of the mind. The body contains cellular memory and unconscious patterns causing conditioned responses. Asana is an exercise in formatting cellular memory. How we think is what we become. Purpose: The asanas develop the physical strength, flexibility, balance and if done properly endurance. Physical perfection is a prerequisite in allowing consciousness to separate from the confines of the physical body. Any changes that we make in our psychology will be reflected in our physiology and vice versa.

4. PRANAYAMA - SCIENCE OF PRANA

Pranayama is the science of Prana (the life force) and its correlation to the breathing process. Purpose: Pranayama is the control of Prana. Yoga recognizes that Prana follows the path of thought. How we think is what we become. There is a direct relationship between how we breathe and how we think. Through the control of breath we can control the thought process. By the control of thought we can shape our reality.

5. PRATYAHARA - SENSE WITHDRAWAL

Pratyahara is a series of breathing exercises and techniques that enables one to separate consciousness from sensual perception. Purpose: Pratyahara enables one to separate the conscious mind from the bondage of the physical body and the instinctual drives. This marks a person's ability to engage intelligence in decision making. The conscious mind becomes the central base of operation and is equipped to withstand influence.

6. DHARANA - CONCENTRATION

Dharana is a series of breathing techniques and exercises, including mantra, designed to develop endurance through conscious effort. Purpose: Dharana is the ability to block out unrelated matter and focus on the task at hand. Concentration develops one's attention span. It is the constant practice of non-attachment and the constant restraint of the thought process--this work is strenuous and effortful.

7. DHYANA - MEDITATION

Dhyana is a series of breathing techniques and exercises experienced from a different level of consciousness. Purpose: Dhyana marks the shift from the effortful work of concentration to the effortless flow state of meditation. Meditation is a state of being where the mind has transcended the limits of instinct and rational thinking. The practitioner has accessed a part of the mind that can do many things at once.

8. SAMADHI - Illumination or "Total Consciousness"

Samadhi is a continuation of the same breathing exercises and techniques experienced as the expansion of consciousness into the causal body. Purpose: Samadhi is when consciousness returns to perfect divine unity. The point of simultaneous observation where one sees themselves as a separate entity, and at the same time, universal.

Because Kriya Yoga is a complete holistic health management system there are many facets and strategies to learn. There is a learning curve to the practices and an evidence procedure to the process.  Everyone is different and has specific strengths and weaknesses, which makes personal attention valuable in escalating physiological/psychological and spiritual development. We have created a program that consists of a path of action, a path of knowledge and a path of devotion when followed correctly will facilitate a process that will lead to the experience of Total Consciousness. Whether you are a beginner or longtime practitioner, IPD can create a program to advance your physical, mental, and spiritual capabilities. We teach Kriya Yoga in all eight stages Yamas, Niyamas, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi. We teach Yoga classes in practice and theory.
